An unfinished iron rolling mill spanning 16,000 m² was converted into a printing house by nearly doubling its usable space. The complex operation, which we know well from the first project, has turned into an even more complex problem this time, due to the forces and strains of the existing structure. The most important question here is whether it is possible to transform a poorly constructed building of this scale into a well-functioning one.
We intervened minimally with the existing structure. Instead of interventions requiring major construction apart from reinforcement, we attempted to address the issues by adding extensions alongside and on top of the main structure. We enveloped the large structure with additional constructions carrying significant functions like stairs, elevators, and entrances. By assembling a four-part structure with right interfaces, we managed to create a cohesive whole. Returning to the primary and most important question, we can say that a comprehensive improvement project is indeed a realistic proposition. Based on this example, we think that we can transform the structural oddities in the stocks into real structures throughout the country without building any new buildings for a while.
